Summer at ALC - Communion

SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
August 17, 2024

Communion
August 17, 2024

And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it. But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then he may eat it. A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat it. In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones.”
Exodus 12:43-46

“All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. And when a stranger dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it. One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.”
Exodus 12:47-49

Communion Is A Remembering Of Our
“Common-Union” With Christ

Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
1 Corinthians 11:17-18

For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you. Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.
1 Corinthians 11:19-20

For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk. What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.
1 Corinthians 11:21-22

The Lord’s Supper
Not A Ritual To Be Observed, But A Blessing To Be Received

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night (Passover) in which He was betrayed took bread;
1 Corinthians 11:23

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
1 Corinthians 11:24-25

“Remembrance”
What Are We Remembering?

Remembering What He Did, Not What You Did

Your Conscience Free From Sin
Your Conscience Free From Sickness

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
1 Corinthians 11:26

Examine Yourself

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 11:27

“Unworthy Manner”
2 Possible Ideas
Non-Believer or
Believer With The Wrong Attitude

So then whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in a way that is unworthy [of Him] will be guilty of [profaning and sinning against] the body and blood of the Lord. But a person must [prayerfully] examine himself [and his relationship to Christ], and only when he has done so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:27-28 AMP

“Unworthy Manner”
Taking The Lord’s Supper
Without Regard To The Remembering
His Body – Physical Health
&
Blood Was Given – Forgiveness of Sin

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:28

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
2 Corinthians 13:5

But a person must [prayerfully] examine himself [and his relationship to Christ], and only when he has done so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks [without solemn reverence and heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ], eats and drinks a judgment on himself if he does not recognize the body [of Christ].
1 Corinthians 11:28-29 Amplified

“judgement on himself”
When You Have Communion
It’s a Covenant Meal Between Two Parties Therefore
If You’re Not In Covenant With That Person “You’re Proclaiming A Lie”

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
1 Corinthians 11:29

“Professing” But Not “Possessing” Salvation

For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
1 Corinthians 11:30-31

Unworthy Manner
Weak, Sick and Sleep

Worthy Manner
Strong, Healthy and Long Life
A Foundation of Righteousness Must Be Understood

The Body & The Blood
