SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
December 14, 2024

Pastor Charlie Riley
December 14, 2024

100 B.C.
David’s Descendants Settle
“Nazareth” Meaning “a branch”
Time Of Jesus About 150 To 450 Families

Joachim (Mary’s Father) and Anna (Mary’s Mother)
Joachim Was A “Scroll Scholar” – For The Sanhedrin
In Nearby Sopphoris – 4 Miles From Nazareth

Mary’s Extended Family Still Lived In Jerusalem
Anna’s Parents Lived In Jerusalem
Mary’s Grandparents On Her Mother’s Side Lived In A House In Jerusalem Behind The North Wall of the Temple A Short Distance From The Pool of Bethesda

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed (Legally Bound But Not Intimate) to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
Luke 1:26-27

And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
Luke 1:28-29

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
Luke 1:30-31

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32-33

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
Luke 1:34

“How can this be…?”
Not, “This can’t be…”

And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:35

Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.  For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Luke 1:36-37

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:38

Because of Her Family Influence, Mary Was:
Committed To God
Committed To God’s Word
Committed To Obeying God

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. (Micah 5:2) Luke 2:1-3

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
Luke 2:4-6

And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:7

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Luke 2:8-11

Who Were The Shepherds?

The “Shepherd’s Fields” Near Bethlehem
260,500 Lambs Were Sacrificed At The Temple
The Lambs Were Under Rabbinical Care
To Insure They Were Ceremonially Clean

And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
Luke 2:9-10

For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ (The Anointed One) the Lord (Over All).
Luke 2:11

Savior Means – Savior, Deliverer, Healer, Protector and Preserver

Jesus Is: The Saving Power Of God
Jesus Is: The Delivering Power Of God
Jesus Is: The Healing Power Of God
Jesus Is: The Protecting Power Of God
Jesus Is: The Preserving Power Of God

And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:12

A Little History
Shepherds would place the newborn lambs in a stone, feeding trough called a “manger” for inspection

Then Shepherds Would Wrap Strips of Cloth Called “Swaddling” on The Legs of The Lamb For Protection

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on
earth peace, goodwill toward men!” So when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”
Luke 2:13-15

Why Were The Angels Singing?

But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”
Ex 33:20-23

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
Isaiah 6:1-3

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
1 Timothy 3:16

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 Corinthians 3:18
