Mark 1:9-16
9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
The Romans were confused…Is He A Suffering Servant? or Messiah: King of the Jews?
Mark 15:39
39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”
Mark Speaks of: Who Jesus Is, Because of What He Did To The Romans
Mark Chapters 1-8 – Here’s Who He Is
Mark Chapters 9-16 – Here’s What He Came To Do
Mark 1:1
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Three Specific Times Jesus Told What He Came To Do
Mark 8:31
Mark 9:31
Mark 10:34
Mark 8:27-33
27 Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?”
28 So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.” 30 Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him. Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection 31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
Jesus Is Our Example
Servant
Mark 10:44-45
And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Mark 9:35
And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Matthew 23:11
But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Why We Struggle With Serving
Enemy of A Servant Mentality
Insecurity
Based On Our Identity
Mark 1:11
Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Identity (You Are My)
Affirmation (I AM Well Pleased)
Acceptance
“You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus Knew Who He Was
Because He Knew Whose He Was
Servant Mentality
Mark 8:34
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Desire
Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Denial (Deny Himself)
Denial Is Not:
Forgoing Earthly Possessions, Not Eating Certain Foods, Ignoring The World, Certain Clothing
Denial Is:
“To Humbly Submit Your Will to The Father’s Will”
Phil 3:7-8
7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
Determination (Take Up Your Cross)
Mark 13:9-13
“But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who[c]endures to the end shall be saved.
Discipleship (Follow Him)
Mark 16:19-20
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.
