More Than A Feeling – Week 2
September 14, 2024
Who Is The Holy Spirit?
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
I John 5:7-8
He is the Director of the Church Age
He Is A Person, Not An Influence
He Possesses All the Attributes of God
He Is A Person, With A Personality
He Lives In Us
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
I Corinthians 3:16 (I Corinthians 6:19, Romans 8:11)
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Romans 8:9
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
John 16:5-7
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me: of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
John 16:8-11
“convict” or “reprove”
Greek – elegcho
to expose, to convict, or to cross-examine for the purpose of conviction – as in convicting a lawbreaker in a court of law.
Three Things Mentioned
Of Sin
Of Righteousness
Of Judgment
1. The Holy Spirit Convicts
“of sin”
“sin” A Noun (Not the Verb)
“of sin because ‘they’ do not believe in me”
The Holy Spirit Convicts Unbelievers of “Sin” (Noun – Original Sin) Because of Their Unbelief Toward Christ
The sin that the Holy Spirit is reproving the world of is the sin of not believing on Jesus. All other acts of sin stem from this one problem. That’s the sin that will send people to hell, not their individual acts. All the sins of the world have been paid for (1 John 2:2) except the sin of rejecting Jesus (John 3:18)
Andrew Wommack Bible Commentary
Great Question That People Ask:
What Is “Convicting/Condemning” Me When I Do Something That Is Not In Line With God’s Will?
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
Genesis 3:9-11
2. The Holy Spirit Convicts “of righteousness” Because I Go To The Father (The Resurrection)
The Holy Spirit Convicts Believers Of The Righteousness Of God (Right Standing in God)
Based On The Finished Work Of The Cross
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21
and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
Philippians 3:9
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:17
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness
Romans 4:5
Who Does He Convict of Righteousness?
Believers!!!!!
3. The Holy Spirit Convicts “of judgment”
The Ruler Of This World Is Judged
The Holy Spirit Convicts Us/Believers That Satan Has Been Judged And Stripped Of All Authority
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:7
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luke 10:19
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Colossians 2:15
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:11
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
I Peter 5:8-9
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Revelation 12:9
And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen
Romans 16:20
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Revelation 20:10
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
John 16:12-13
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
John 16:14-15
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14
